When a Tree Needs to Come Down
Removing a mature tree is always a last resort, and an honest arborist will tell you when a tree can be saved. But some trees genuinely need to go. The most common reasons we remove trees in Chilliwack:
Dead, dying, or diseased trees
A dead tree is a standing hazard — limbs shed without warning and the trunk weakens over time. Signs include large dead sections in the crown, fungal fruiting bodies (conks) on the trunk, bark falling off in sheets, and no leaf-out in spring. Some diseases, like root rot common in our wet valley soils, make a tree unpredictable long before it looks dead.
Structural defects and storm risk
Cracks, co-dominant stems with included bark, heavy lean with recent soil heaving, and large dead leaders are all red flags. Chilliwack's fall and winter windstorms find every weak point — a hazard assessment before storm season is cheap insurance.
Construction, views, and the wrong tree in the wrong place
Fast-growing cottonwoods planted decades ago near foundations, driveways, or septic fields are a classic valley problem — their aggressive roots lift concrete and invade drain fields. Additions, shops, and laneway projects also require clearing. We coordinate removals around your build schedule.
Root damage
If roots are lifting your driveway, cracking a foundation, or clogging drains, removing the tree is often the only permanent fix. We will tell you honestly when root pruning or barriers might work instead — but for aggressive species near structures, removal plus stump grinding is usually the answer.
Our Removal Process
- Assessment and written quoteWe inspect the tree's health, lean, and structure, check access for equipment, identify hazards like power lines, and give you a clear written price.
- Planning the workEvery removal gets a plan: drop zone or dismantling sequence, rigging points, crane needs, and protection for your lawn, garden beds, and structures.
- Sectional dismantling or controlled fellingNear houses we take the tree down piece by piece, lowering sections with ropes. In open areas we fell directionally. Large or confined trees get crane assistance.
- Cleanup and stump optionsBranches are chipped, wood is cut to firewood rounds or hauled away, and the site is raked clean. Add stump grinding to finish the job completely.
Safety Is Non-Negotiable
Tree removal is one of the most dangerous jobs in any trade, which is why it should never be a DIY project for anything larger than a small ornamental. Our crews work with proper climbing and rigging gear, hard hats, eye and hearing protection, and a ground crew trained in communication and drop-zone discipline.
Trees near power lines are a special case. Never touch a tree that is contacting or close to energized lines, and never let cut branches fall toward them. Only utility-approved crews work within the minimum approach distance — if your tree is near lines, tell us when you call and we will coordinate with BC Hydro or FortisBC as needed.
What Affects the Cost
Every tree is different, which is why we quote on site rather than over the phone. The main pricing factors:
- Size and species — height, trunk diameter, and wood density (a mature fir costs more to handle than a small ornamental cherry).
- Location and lean — a tree leaning over your roof takes far more rigging than one in an open field.
- Proximity to structures, fences, and lines — tight quarters mean slower, more technical work.
- Access — can our truck and chipper reach the tree, or is everything carried out by hand through a side gate?
- Condition — dead, brittle wood is unpredictable and slower to work safely than live wood.
- Cleanup level and stump grinding — firewood rounds vs. full haul-away, and whether the stump goes too.
Smaller jobs are often completed in a single visit. Call 778-878-6076 for a free on-site estimate anywhere in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, or Hope.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a tree removal take?
Most residential removals take two to four hours. Large, complex, or crane-assisted removals can take a full day. When we quote, we give you a realistic time window so you can plan around it.
Will you damage my lawn or driveway?
We take real precautions: ground protection mats under heavy equipment, rigging to lower cut sections instead of dropping them, and careful planning of the drop zone. Some minor turf wear can happen on very soft ground, and we rake and restore the area before leaving.
What happens to the wood?
Your choice. Branches are chipped on site. Trunk wood can be cut into firewood rounds and stacked for you, or hauled away entirely. Just tell us your preference when we quote.
Can you remove a tree that is close to my house?
Yes — that is most of what we do. Near structures we dismantle the tree in sections, lowering each piece with ropes and rigging. For very large or confined trees we bring in a crane. Controlled felling is only used where there is clear open space.
Do you also remove the stump?
Stump grinding is a separate service, but it is easy to add to the same visit — usually the most cost-effective way to do it. See our stump grinding page for details.
